Addenbrooke's Road Public Art: Time Line Tree
Pages: Time Line Tree

The plans for public art along the Addenbrooke's Road include a Time Line Tree wood carving with significant dates in Trumpington's history.

Diana Johnston, a local artist and Residents' Association member, is responsible for the Time Line Tree sculpture. Diana was selected by Cambridgeshire County Council to create a Phase 1 public artwork for the Addenbrooke’s Access Road development. The sculpture will consist of two tree trunks wrapped in copper etched bands containing text, dates and drawings of Trumpington from the past to the present. The tree trunks have been removed from the junction with Hauxton Road. Diana discovered that the beech trees (Dalwyck Beech) were planted in Hauxton Road in December 1951, so one tree will contain details from Neolithic times to that date and the second tree will be wrapped with stories from 1951 to the present. Diana has been leading community workshops to recall local ‘happenings' from the past to the present. These ideas will be selected and perhaps illustrated and form the Trumpington Time Line. Famous events, personalities and dates will be placed around the tree using carved text or text on bands circling the tree. The earliest events will be placed at the base of the tree and the most recent near the top. The information will be repeated on the ground with the text printed on the ground, radiating outward from the tree base echoing the growth rings of the tree.

The images below show the trees and examples of the way they are inspiring Diana's work.

There is also a
report on the public art event held at Fawcett Primary school on 4 July 2009 (8MB Word file). The report contains pictures of families, adults and children participating (enthusiastically) in the workshop and discussing the project.
