Transport developments

Work is underway on two major transport developments in Trumpington: the southern end of the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway and the Addenbrooke's Road. The impact of these developments is described in the
Southern Fringe Area Development Framework, published by Cambridge City Council in 2006.

busway.

The southern part of the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway links the Trumpington Park & Ride site to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge station and the city centre. The busway follows the route of the former Cambridge-Bedford railway line through Trumpington, from the Park & Ride site on Hauxton Road to Long Road and the station.

Addenbrooke's Road

See
photo diary of construction work.

Opened on 27 October 2010, the
Addenbrooke's Road runs from Hauxton Road (between M11 junction 11 and the entrance to the Park & Ride site) to Shelford Road and then Addenbrooke's Hospital. In addition to serving Addenbrooke's Hospital, this will provide the southern access into the Glebe Farm and Clay Farm developments.

The road received planning permission in November 2006.

The first phase from Hauxton Road to Shelford Road extends a short distance to the north east of Shelford Road, to a new roundabout which will give access to the Clay Farm site. The M11/A10 junction is also being upgraded.

The second phase runs from Shelford Road to Addenbrooke's, including a bridge over the railway.

The road is 9.5 metres wide, including 1.5 metre on-road cycleways on each side of the road. There is a segregated foot and cycle paths. New bridges have been constructed over Hobson's Brook and the railway line. The route is lit, but this is confined to the footway in the green corridor. There is a 40mph speed limit from Hauxton Road to Shelford Road and 30mph from Shelford Road to Addenbrooke's.

The construction of the road has involved the demolition of a number of houses on Shelford Road (107-113 and 110).

Archaeological checks in advance of the work found evidence of Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman use of the area.

There were meant to be a number of
public art features on the road.

Tackling congestion

Cambridgeshire County Council is developing a strategy for tackling congestion. The
County Council has information and maps about the plans.

One of the elements had been a proposed congestion charging scheme for Cambridge, but this was withdrawn in June 2008. There would also be a package of improvements to road, cycle and bus services, including an
additional Park & Ride site at Hauxton and new bus routes and cycle links.
