Transport developments

Work is underway on two major transport developments in Trumpington: the southern end of the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway and the Addenbrooke's Access Road. The impact of these developments is described in the
Southern Fringe Area Development Framework, published by Cambridge City Council in 2006.

The County Council is developing a strategy for tackling congestion, including road, bus and cycle improvements which will affect the area.

Details below.

Cambridgeshire Guided Busway

The southern part of the
Cambridgeshire Guided Busway will link the Trumpington Park & Ride site to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge station and the city centre. The busway will follow the route of the former Cambridge-Bedford railway line through Trumpington, from the Park & Ride site on Hauxton Road to Long Road and the station.

During the summer of 2007, a new pedestrian and cycle underpass was constructed under Long Road. This was built to the west of the existing railway bridge, which will be used for the busway itself.

Work also began on the construction of a bridge over the main railway line, to carry the busway to Addenbrooke's Hospital. The main beams of the bridge were lifted into place on 20 October 2007.

Addenbrooke's Access Road

The
Addenbrooke's Access Road will run from Hauxton Road (between M11 junction 11 and the entrance to the Park & Ride site) to Shelford Road and then Addenbrooke's Hospital. In addition to serving Addenbrooke's Hospital, this will provide the southern access into the Clay Farm development.

The road received planning permission in November 2006.

The first phase from Hauxton Road to Shelford Road will extend a short distance to the north east of Shelford Road, to a new roundabout which will give access to the Clay Farm site. The road itself has been completed, but the junctions still have to be contructed: the Shelford Road junction from October 2008 - January 2009, then the Hauxton Road junction from January 2009, including the road into Trumpington Meadows. The M11/A10 junction will also be upgraded before the new road is opened.

Work is now underway on the second phase from Shelford Road to Addenbrooke's, including a bridge over the railway.

The road will be 9.5 metres wide, including 1.5 metre on-road cycleways on each side of the road. There will be segregated foot and cycle paths. New bridges will be constructed over Hobson's Brook and the railway line. The route will be lit, but this will be confined to the footway in the green corridor. There will be a 40mph speed limit from Hauxton Road to Shelford Road and 30mph from Shelford Road to Addenbrooke's.

The construction of the road has involved the demolition of a number of houses on Shelford Road (107-113 and 110).

Archaeological checks in advance of the work have found evidence of Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman use of the area.

Tackling congestion

Cambridgeshire County Council is developing a strategy for tackling congestion. The
County Council has information and maps about the plans.

One of the elements had been a proposed congestion charging scheme for Cambridge, but this was withdrawn in June 2008. There would also be a package of improvements to road, cycle and bus services, including an
additional Park & Ride site at Hauxton and new bus routes and cycle links.
